I began to draw at a young age; I taught myself how while in math class and social studies. I was constantly drawing and I simply didn’t have much interest in any other subjects, with, perhaps the exception of the female human anatomy. Although I wasn’t interested in a formal art education I did entertain the idea for a couple of years before dropping out to travel the world (China, India, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, New Zealand, Australia etc..) and explore my own methods of self-education. Therefore, I’m predominately a self-taught artist...
My twenties and early thirties were spent learning many things which have proven to be useless at this point in my life, such as how to carve an apple into a pipe or how to drink a “bar mistake” quickly without being seen by management. After many years traveling domestically and abroad I decided to take all of my worldly knowledge to Asheville, NC, lock myself in my basement and force myself to watch I Love Lucy reruns until I hated her. It only took one episode so i took to painting. What was once a hobby has now turned into a career.
I enjoy the unexpected, art which can make you think, but also make you grin. I enjoy exercising my imagination the way many people enjoy doing a crossword puzzle. Picasso once said, “All children are artist, the trick is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” I simply chose not to grow up.
My paintings, if executed properly, should speak for themselves without the need for explanation. However, I relish in knowing that each person will interpret the same image a little differently and I’m happy with that.
